The quality of pellet formation in disc granulation depends less on the disc itself and more on the pre-treatment of the feed material. Many production lines suffer from low pelletization rates, poor granule strength, and high levels of recycled material—issues often rooted in the crushing stage. The half-wet material crusher is the key piece of equipment for overcoming this bottleneck.
Disc granulation process requires feed material to have uniform fineness, be free of long, tangling fibers, and possess appropriate moisture content. However, fermented organic raw materials—such as manure, straw, and fungal residue—are typically high in moisture, sticky, and fibrous. Standard crushers struggle with these materials, leading to clogged screens, fiber entanglement, or heat damage to organic matter. Consequently, the material entering the disc varies in particle size and clumps heavily; the material curtain breaks, and the pelletization rate drops.
The half-wet material crusher is designed specifically to address these pain points. It features a screenless design, relying on high-speed rotating hammers or chains to repeatedly strike and shear the material. Inside the crushing chamber, materials collide and rub against each other, exiting only when the desired fineness is achieved. Even wet materials with moisture content between 20% and 40% pass through smoothly without clogging or sticking. High-speed shearing cuts long fibers, preventing entanglement within the granulation disc. The output fineness ranges from 60 to 200 mesh, meeting the standards for disc granulation feed.
Crucially, the crushing process generates minimal heat, preserving organic matter and microbial activity—a vital factor for bio-organic fertilizers. The crushed material is loose and uniform with consistent moisture; this ensures a continuous, stable material curtain during granulation, resulting in higher pelletization rates, perfectly round granules, and reduced material recycling.
When selecting equipment, the processing capacity of the half-wet crusher should slightly exceed that of the disc granulator, and a buffer hopper should be installed to ensure continuous feeding. An aging or conditioning stage can be added between crushing and granulation to allow moisture to penetrate evenly, bringing the material to the optimal state for pellet formation.
While it may appear to be merely an auxiliary unit, the right half-wet material crusher is the primary safeguard for the efficient operation of the entire production line. Solid execution at the crushing stage is the key to achieving superior results in disc granulation.
